Welcome Note from President of AFSN

Dear all colleagues,

On behalf of Asian Forensic Sciences Network, I welcome all of you to the AFSN Second Annual Meeting & Symposium to be held at the Empire Hotel, Brunei Darussalam, from 1 to 3 June 2010.

AFSN was formed in 2008 with six founding member institutes. To date, AFSN has 15 member institutes from 10 Asian countries. A total of five workgroups/committee have also being formed to act as the platform for discussion, advancement, and collaboration of the discipline.

Last year we had a very successful AFSN Inaugural Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It was well attended by about one hundred participants from 23 Institutes of 13 Countries. This year, we are organising a full three-day programme for all participants. There will be workshops, scientific sessions, workgroups and committee business meeting, as well as AFSN Annual General Meeting. In addition, there will be ample opportunities during lunches and welcome dinner to catch up with one another, share ideas, strengthen ties and improve collaboration. We hope that you will also be able to participate in this symposium by presenting oral or poster papers.

The Asian Forensic Sciences Network 2nd Annual Meeting & Symposium, 1st -3rd June 2010, Brunei Darussalam

As the Chairperson of the Organising Committee for the AFSN 2nd Annual Meeting & Symposium to be held in Brunei Darussalam on 1st – 3rd June 2010, and on behalf of the Department of Scientific Services, I would like to extend my warmest welcome to all of you to come to Brunei Darussalam to attend this AFSN Meeting and Symposium – SELAMAT DATANG.

The Department of Scientifc Services of the Ministry of Health, Brunei Darussalam is honoured to host this important forensic event this year and this is the first time we organise an international forensic science event. The venue is the Grand Hall of the renowned 5-star Empire Hotel & Country Club which is a beach resort with a scenic view of the beautiful South China Sea.

Brunei Darussalam is a small country, rich in culture and strong in national heritage. It is peaceful and prosperous with a wealth of biodiversity. So, do take this opportunity to come and visit Brunei Darussalam to discover this Kingdom of Unexpected Treasure and I assure you that you will have a good time.

There will be a full 3-day scientific programme of Keynote lectures, Workgroups workshops, Oral and Poster presentations, Business Meetings and social events of welcoming dinner and visits & tours. One of the Keynote Lectures will be delivered by the most renowned forensic scientist, Professor Dr. Henry C. Lee from the University of New Haven, Connecticut, USA. There will be a half day DNA workshop on DNA Mixture Interpretation conducted by the well-known Dr. Bruce Budowle from the University of Texas and there will be many more other workshops on other forensic disciplines.

With such a full programme to look forward to, this is a golden opportunity for us to come together to renew friendship or make new ones; to assist each other, to share information and data, to learn of the current challenges in forensic sciences, to update ourselves of new technology in order to achieve our ultimate goal of providing forensic science services of high quality.

To make this an affordable and memorable trip, we will provide complimentary lunches and the Welcoming Dinner. Please do re-visit this AFSN website regularly as we shall be constantly updating the information for the coming meeting.
